A website's traffic is the lifeline that keeps it going. A website without visitors is like a book that isn't being read. It doesn't matter if this book is a book of poetry, a novel, or even a dictionary, if no one is reading it, it becomes a waste, something setting on a shelf collecting dust.
Lack of traffic is the number one complaint of webmasters. But when you're just getting started how do you generate traffic? And let's be honest, you don't want just any traffic, you want targeted traffic because anything less is a waste of your time and money.
Targeted traffic will arrive at your site with an interest in the topic you are presenting. To take that a step further, they may come to your site ready, willing and able to take action on your offers. If you compare that to untargeted traffic, where the odds are stacked against you getting anyone's attention with your offers, even the exceptional offers, why bother?
I mean, if you are a fisherman looking for fishing gear and somehow you end up on a site selling baseball bats, there's a good chance that you will simply click away. Right?
Okay, so how can you find affordable, targeted traffic? One way is by using a quality Traffic Exchange. Now I will admit, this is not the easiest way to get traffic, but it is inexpensive and after you learn some of the secrets to using the exchanges, along with other types of promotion, you may find your business growing at a phenomenal rate.
First let's look at what Traffic Exchanges are. To put it simply, a Traffic Exchange is a service you can join to generate free traffic to your site. This service does involve your time. You will be required to view other members' web pages for a required period of time (usually 10 - 30 seconds), depending on which exchange you use. For each viewing you earn credits that will entitle you to have your site viewed by others.
Benefits Of Participating In Traffic Exchanges
1. Most will offer a free membership with the opportunity to upgrade. The upgrade will increase the credits you receive each time you view a member's website.
2. Depending on the effort you're willing to commit, it usually doesn't take long to see an increase in traffic.
3. Traffic Exchanges provide an easy way to test new sales copy, before using it in a paid service.
4. You can refer others to the program giving you the opportunity to build a "downline". Your downline will help you to earn credits more quickly, and over time your traffic can be almost entirely generated by others.
5. By viewing your competitor's sites you will keep current on trends, products, etc. available. This will enable you to keep up in various ways
Which Traffic Exchange Program To Join
Before you jump in and sign up with the first program you see, there are certain things you should consider. Some Traffic Exchange programs are better than others!
1. Credit Ratio - Although you will earn credits with all of the exchanges, some are more generous than others. Shop and compare. You want a good return for viewing other websites.
2. Time Limits - All exchanges will have a required viewing time, anywhere from 10 - 30 seconds. The longer you have to wait, the slower your surfing - but on the other hand, that means that other members will be on your page longer. Weigh it out.
3. Anti Cheat Mechanisms - Unfortunately, people attempt to cheat whenever and wherever there is a way. Rather than simply having a "Next Button", most exchanges will request that you select a graphic (such as a number, letter, icon, or picture). This is a tactic to ensure that the viewer is in fact a real person. This protects you.
4. Referrals - Building a downline is definitely the fastest way to build credits. Check out and compare the programs offered by the various exchanges.
5. Paid/Pro Memberships - I recommend starting with the free memberships, then if you decide a program has a lot of potential upgrade. Some of the upgrades provide substantial privileges not offered to the free members.
6. Bonuses - Bonus Credits are usually given for signing up, for surfing a certain number of pages, or for winning a contest of some sort. But in addition to that, some exchanges give bonuses, or double surfing points on particular days, or times, etc. Obviously, earning bonus credits can build up your credit base even faster.
Making Traffic Exchanges Work For You
At least in the beginning, it is important that you surf on a regular basis. If you haven't already developed a schedule for your workdays/week this is a good time to do it. A good strategy is to set aside a couple of hours each day just for surfing.
It is time consuming but the traffic will build and if your downline builds as well, then a big part of your surfing can be eliminated. Why? When these members surf, and as they recruit others, you will receive credits.
I suggest that you send a personal email to welcome and offer help to any new members referred by you. If you have any tips about using the exchange it would be great to share that as well. Remember, you want them to do well with this - it is going to help you. Talk to them about recruitment ideas. In this business, the more the merrier!
Although the use of Traffic Exchanges may seem a little slow going at first, this strategy will work if you are consistent with it. Creating your downline may take awhile but after it starts to build you will see your traffic increase very quickly. In the end, you'll have the traffic you want, which will lead to a list and sales, all without spending a lot of money on advertisement.
